Beginning the week of March 4 all third grade students will be taking the IREAD-3 test. This is a standardized test that is mandated by the state to evaluate students' reading proficiency. Our teachers have been teaching students the skills necessary to become proficient readers and to be successful on the test all year. If students do not pass the test they will be required to participate in remediation and retake the test, beginning the week of May 15. Scores from the first round of testing will be available near Spring Break time.

Dear Parent or Guardian,
The Community Foundation of White County will be conducting a research survey of our youth in grades 6-12.
The results will help us work together to help young people succeed and thrive in life.
The survey is titled the Developmental Assets Profile. The survey focuses on the strengths and supports that
youth have and need in their lives. This survey will help our organization work with you to ensure that the
young people we work with have the opportunities they need to be successful in life. The survey focuses on
young people’s own perceptions of their strengths.
Overview of Key Points:
● The survey is not a test. It is a survey of your child’s experiences and opinions. There are no right or
wrong answers.
● There are no consequences if your child chooses not to participate. Students who do not participate will
be asked to read or study quietly while the survey is administered.
● The survey will be completed digitally and will take less than 10 minutes to complete.
● The survey is anonymous. Your child’s name will never be attached to his/her response.
● Participation is completely voluntary. You may refuse participation on behalf of your child and your child
can skip items if they choose and end their participation at any time.
● The survey asks about young people’s own experiences and ideas as well as some information about
themselves (e.g., age, gender, race-ethnicity).
● Other than some possible discomfort with some questions, there are no risks to participating in this
study. Your child will be told of his/her right to skip any question he/she does not want to answer.
● Key overall findings will be shared with families and others who are interested in ensuring that young
people have the support they need in their lives.
● A copy of the survey will be available for your review on the school’s website at
www.tlschools.org.
● Participating families will be entered into a drawing for a prize, in appreciation.
The value of a study of this kind depends upon the participation of many youth. We hope you will encourage
your child to participate. In doing so, they will help strengthen the supports for youth in White County.
You must complete and return the form on the back of this letter by January 22nd indicating if you give
permission or withdraw your child from participating. If no form is received, you will be notified a second time
on February 9th. If no form is received by February 16th, your child will be asked to participate in the study.
If you have any questions, please contact Lucy Dold at (574) 583-6911, Monday - Friday 9am-5pm. Thank you.
