Also offered at the Twin Lakes Career and Technical Center are Healthcare Specialist- CNA, Principles of Healthcare and Medical Terminology taught by Mrs. Rachelle White-Bird. These medical-based classes are available to students in grades 10-12.
Mrs. White-Bird teaches her students: chain of infection, Resident Rights and Privacy, debate ethics, differences in healthcare facilities (including tours to places students are interested in each academic season), different healthcare careers (Vet, dentistry, radiology, phlebotomy, primary care, nursing, EMT, paramedic), cultural differences in healthcare, world history of healthcare and the impact it has on today's healthcare, insurance, the business of healthcare, obtaining jobs- resumes, applications and even live interviews with people within their area of interest.
Students are able to earn certifications in CNA, CPR and dementia. Former students have used these skills to work in all facets of the healthcare industry. “The great thing about healthcare is that to know it means you have access to being a researcher, a practitioner, law, business management,” shared White-Bird.
Mrs. White-Bird is beginning her second year of teaching at Twin Lakes High School. She completed two years of business education at Purdue University before returning to school to obtain her RN and BSN. She also has experience in long-term care, and outpatient care giving sites.
